Introduction

This weekend is the first-ever Wizards Unite Fan Festival (WUFF), and with it, the first-ever Global Challenge! While players in Indianapolis work with dragon expert Charlie Weasley to help contain the Calamity, players around the world have been tasked with other crucial work for the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.

(If you missed this week’s news about the Global Challenge, be sure to check out our overview of all the new details here.)

In-game news

This guide is for witches and wizards around the globe who want to help complete the Global Challenge and unlock a week of worldwide bonuses. For those headed in Indianapolis, on the other hand, we’ve got a full Wizards Unite Fan Festival Attendee Guide to help you prepare.

Tasks and Rewards

For this Global Challenge, players have been given a pretty straightforward task: collect and unlock new special Portkeys containing Dragon Eggs. There are four types of Dragon Eggs, and four corresponding Portkeys to match.

For each kind of Dragon Egg, there is a special global bonus available. If unlocked, these bonuses will each last a week, from September 2 at 10:00 AM PDT to September 9 at 10:00 AM PDT. Here are all the possible bonuses and their associated Dragon Eggs:

  • 25% increased Wizarding XP

    • Requires: 1,000,000 Chinese Fireball Eggs

  • ½ Portkey Distance

    • Requires: 1,000,000 Antipodean Opaleye Eggs

  • ½ Brewing Time

    • Requires: 1,000,000 Peruvian Vipertooth Eggs

  • 1-hour Dark Detectors

    • Requires: 1,000,000 Common Welsh Green Eggs

To clarify, each bonus is scored separately, so it’s possible for only some of the bonuses to be unlocked. The Wizards Unite team will be updating players on the progress throughout the weekend on their social media channels.

Free Gift

As part of the Global Challenge, players can receive to Free Gift containing:

  • 3 Silver Keys
  • Global Challenge 2019 Profile Badge

To receive this reward, players must simply go to Diagon Alley (the in-game shop), tap the gift, and tap "Claim."

How to Collect Dragon Eggs

Okay, so how do we actually collect so many Dragon Eggs?? Good question! Ten points to Slytherin.

As mentioned above, the Dragon Eggs will be found in special Portkeys. These Portkeys will be appearing for 48 hours only, from 9:00 A.M. EDT Saturday, August 31 (the start of WUFF) until 9:00 A.M. Monday, September 2

Peculiar Portkey Portmanteau containing a Common Welsh Green Egg

As shown above, players will be able to differentiate these special Portkeys Portmanteaus from others on the map by their unique colouring. The example above contains a Common Welsh Green Egg fragment. Here’s what the others look like:

From left to right, that’s the Chinese Fireball, Antipodean Opaleye, Peruvian Vipertooth, and Common Welsh Green.

These special Portkey Portmanteaus will require players to walk 1km to unlock them. Once opened, they will transport players to the Forbidden Forest (turns out it’s not all that forbidden). They’ll have wrackspurts with similar rewards to other Portkeys, but these special Portkeys may also reward Spell Energy

Day of the Dragons

There’s one final worldwide bonus players can unlock this weekend: Day of the Dragons. This event will bring one “guest” dragon to each region for three hours on Saturday, September 7.

Here are the hours for the event:

  • Asia-Pacific: 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. AEST (UTC +10)

  • Europe, the Middle East, Africa and India: 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. UTC

  • Americas and Greenland: 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. PDT (UTC -7)

Players in Indianapolis will have to return 150,000 Dragons during WUFF to unlock the special event, while players worldwide can “vote” this weekend on which regional dragon they want to have visit their region.

The “voting” process is simple: for each region, whichever species of Dragon Eggs players collect the most of will decide which Dragon visits their region on Dragon Day.

For example, if players in the Americas and Greenland collect more Chinese Fireball Eggs than any other kind, the Chinese Fireball will visit the Americas and Greenland during Day of the Dragons.

We’ll discuss possible strategies for which Dragon to “vote” for in your region below. Stay tuned for more details on Day of the Dragons too. As more information is released, we’ll be sure to put together a full guide to help you make the most of the event, no matter which Dragon visits your region!

Completing the Registry

Dragon Eggs

Each Dragon Egg requires 4 fragments to place for the first time. While prestiging these pages will be challenging for most players because they contain region-locked Dragons, players keen to place the images will need to walk roughly 16km or use silver keys to place all four.

Note: Originally, the registry (and this article) listed the Dragon Eggs as each requiring 12 fragments to place. This has since been changed to only 4. Players may need to restart the app to see the changes.

Currently, the official word is that these Dragon Egg Portkeys will only be available this weekend. We reached out to the Wizards Unite team for clarification as to whether there might be another way to obtain Dragon Eggs after the 48 hour event (such as in regular Portkeys), and we were told:

I do not have an answer for you at the moment! This should all be revealed in the next week.

If you prefer to play it safe, it's time to get walking this weekend, so you can be sure to place all four Dragon Eggs in the registry.

Dragons

Players looking to strategise and complete as much of their registry as possible have two major factors to consider: page completion and likelihood of travel. First, many players have suggested focusing on whichever Dragon shares a page with their region’s native Dragon.

For reference, the Chinese Fireball (Asia, the Middle East, and India) and the Antipodean Opaleye (Oceania) share a page, while the Peruvian Vipertooth (the Americas and Greenland) and the Common Welsh Green (Europe and Africa) share the other page.

Oddities III Registry Page
Oddities IV Registry Page

This first strategy suggests that players in the Americas will want to collect more of the Common Welsh Green Eggs than any other, in order to be able to prestige that page. (Note, however, that this does require completing the Eggs for both of these Dragons as well, which is 24 Dragon Egg fragments at minimum.)

Another strategy some have suggested, however, is to aim for a Dragon from a region players are least likely to visit. For example, players near the Asia-Oceania border might not really want to get a Dragon that they could take a short vacation to visit, and might instead opt for the Peruvian Vipertooth or Common Welsh Green.

Of course, many other players might just be happy with whichever dragon they get and prefer to focus on unlocking their favourite bonus, or even just relax and collect whichever Dragon Eggs come their way.

However you choose to approach it, the Ministry appreciates your efforts to help contain the Calamity!

Because there is currently no way to complete both pages entirely without travelling (unless you live in Indianapolis), players who really want to complete both pages will just need to hold out hope that the Wizards Unite team will offer future chances to get these regionals without needing to travel to another continent.

Conclusion

Hopefully this helps you feel a bit more prepared for this weekend’s Global Challenge! If you're looking for more information about Wizards Unite Fan Festival and the Global Challenge, be sure to check out our other guides and articles linked below.

And while you're out this weekend collecting Dragon Eggs, don't forget about the current Brilliant Event, Back to Hogwarts Part Two. A little tip for those still working on the Special Assignments: the final set of tasks involves unlocking Portkeys, so the 1km Portkeys this weekend would be a great opportunity to finish off that task!
